Well, that ends the tour of our "new" home. Hope to see you again soon!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-23612126912341577302011-11-02T21:50:00.000-07:002011-11-02T22:08:28.076-07:00I've Been Xeroxed<p>For those of you who haven't heard yet, I finally got a job! (For those of you who have heard, here is my looooong-promised post about my new job.)</p>
<p>I was originally hired to work for <a target="atoz" href="http://www.acs-inc.com/about_acs.aspx">ACS, A Xerox Company</a>, a company that, among other things, provides contract work for government agencies. I was hired to work on the newly-acquired Medi-Cal contract (California's Medicaid program).</p>
<p>Now here's the surprise: I am a web analyst. You guessed it - I sit in my cubicle, hunched over my desk, refreshing websites and occasionally yelling "<a target="atoz" href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdh4ya_los-links-episode-uno-bing-tv-comme_tech">los links</a>!"</p>
<p>Actually, I usually just write/edit/post articles and documents on the <a target="atoz" href="http://www.medi-cal.ca.gov">Medi-Cal</a> website. I'm learning all sorts of interesting things about web writing, including JavaScript and CSS (which happens to be my favorite so far). If you would like to see a sample of something that I have created at work, you can view the <a target="atoz" href="http://files.medi-cal.ca.gov/pubsdoco/Publications/masters-other/cdp/userguide08/index.asp">CDP: EWC</a> tutorial, which I designed and wrote (the script, not the actual content). (FYI, the Web page looks much better if you view it in <a target="atoz" href="http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/">Mozilla Firefox</a> or <a target="atoz" href="http://www.google.com/chrome">Google Chrome</a>.) It was fun to make! I guess that I should start vamping up our blog a little bit ...</p>
<p>Anyway, I was recently transferred over to <a target="atoz" href="http://www.xerox.com/">Xerox</a>, so if anyone ever asks you what I do, you can tell them that I am a web analyst hired by Xerox to work on the Medi-Cal contract with ACS, A Xerox Company. Is that confusing enough?</p>
<p>Here are some pictures of my work (sorry that I can't take any pictures inside the building):</p>

I certainly am.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Zac and I had our own personalized Valentine's Day this year. Rather than going on a date on the 14th, we decided to wait until the weekend (mainly so I wouldn't be stressed about my interview). I did, however, make a special Valentine's Day dinner on the actual day:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6jZS2tYdCGuHU8NiXHPLdgKjvltoGPWHootQF-Q2N7TrmuExPQuMGmh383Kqvs_Ht7LptYHaDPU7iIEbBBX8AwsF1RYB7r_LBQpuS2_l1_umSbzatp_oAArcEX63mPUWij9vqZBKlKA0/s1600/Valentine%2527s+Day+%25288%2529.JPG"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6jZS2tYdCGuHU8NiXHPLdgKjvltoGPWHootQF-Q2N7TrmuExPQuMGmh383Kqvs_Ht7LptYHaDPU7iIEbBBX8AwsF1RYB7r_LBQpuS2_l1_umSbzatp_oAArcEX63mPUWij9vqZBKlKA0/s320/Valentine%2527s+Day+%25288%2529.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Q: Aren't you a little manly to be eating pink rice?</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>A: Why yes, yes I am.</i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">That Friday, Zac planned a special date night. We decided not to go out to a fancy restaurant and went to Panda Express instead (yes, that is still one of my favorite places to eat--I'm not sick of it yet). Then, we went to a local Borders to ... read? no ... buy books? no ... do a scavenger hunt? yes! Zac picked some categories and we searched to find the best book for that category. Need some examples?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Category: Best book for Zac</div><div style="text-align: left;">Winner: Discover Your Inner Economist (I found that book, of course)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Category: Best book for Amanda</div><div style="text-align: left;">Winner: some book about making decisions </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

We had a great time, and there were even some other Jazz fans near us to help us cheer them on. Little did we know that we were watching Jerry Sloan's last win as the coach of the Utah Jazz - a few days after this game, Sloan announced his resignation. Sad day for Utah Jazz fans, especially for those who, like us, have only known Sloan as the coach. Had we known this was one of his last games, we would have tried to sneak onto the court to get a photo with him (ha ha). Hats off to Sloan for a fine 22 years as head coach. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I found out that I really like sewing, especially if I do it while watching some of my favorite movies. Anyway, I thought that I'd just post a few pictures of some of the things that I've made so far.<div><br />
</div><div>I made some curtains for our kitchen because the blinds were really gross and because we needed room for our herb garden. They're great because they give the plants enough room to grow and don't fall down every other day (like the blinds did).</div><div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">My ward has a "sewing club," where a lady in our ward teaches us all sorts of interesting things about sewing (she studied design in college, so she has a lot of helpful tips). I attend now that I have a sewing machine and can practice the things that we learn at home. For the months of November and December, we made advent calendars out of felt and canvas. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Zac and I have about a million different versions of Scrabble, so we have spent some time over the last few months playing the different versions. This particular game (pictured below) took us about two weeks to finish. Needless to say, we didn't play Scrabble again for a few months.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Zac finally got to enjoy his Christmas present this month when we went to the Jazz vs Kings game in Sacramento. Unfortunately, the Jazz lost (how could they?). We had a great time anyway, and we weren't the only Jazz fans there either. Later, I had a chance to enjoy my Christmas present when Zac did a class project on glow-in-the-dark roses. I used Photoshop to make some images for his presentation:<br />

During the summer, my sisters came to visit me. Andrea came first, and we had a really great time together. I just felt bad that she had to sleep on our couch the whole time she was there. I put together a small slideshow of some of the things that we did for those who are interested. No, it does not include the many episodes of SpongeBob that she made me watch with her. (To watch the slideshow, don't click on the large green "play" button because that will take you to another web page. Instead, click near the bottom of the box and another "play" button will come up, or you can click through the pictures manually.)<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Andrea recommended that I read the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunger_Games_trilogy">Hunger Games series</a>, and I actually really enjoyed the first two. When it was my turn to choose the book for my book club, I had everyone read the first book. I wish I had a picture of all the amazing baked goods that everyone brought to the first group, but since I don't, I will just let you know that it all tasted very good. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">During the summer, I started volunteering for different studies at UC Davis. I am happy to inform you that I am now a trained cantaloupe taster. The study was testing different ways of ripening cantaloupe so companies could know how to better deliver fruit to stores (there were also similar studies with pears and other fruit). So, if you ever need someone to taste and describe your cantaloupe, I will be happy to do it for you. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I also get paid to take showers, as I am a natural context expert body wash panelist. A body wash company gave some money to UC Davis to run a panel to test different products and rate them. I was fortunate enough to get a spot on that panel, and as a result, I have free body wash, some of which is pretty interesting, such as the Japanese version of Dove (which totally dries out my skin). I also have about 40 poufs that I have no idea what to do with. Anyway, those are just a few things that I did to fill up my days during the summer. Oh, and they also sent us some funny body wash-based jokes</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Well, the summer flew by way too fast, and it was finally time for Aimee and Amber to come visit me. Unfortunately, Zac couldn't spend as much time with us because he had to work, but we still had a lot of fun. I made another slideshow of pictures to show a few of the things that we ended up doing. </div><div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Before Aimee and Amber could become sick of us, we drove them home to Utah to see my family and to celebrate my graduation! Yes, folks, I am finally a college graduate! Woohoo! We did some major celebrating while I was there. Here is yet another slideshow for your viewing pleasure:</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">If you were wondering why Zac looked a little tired in all the pictures, it was because he was sliced open the day after we arrived in Utah. Fortunately, the doctors removed his appendix before it did too much harm, and he was doing everything normally a few weeks later. He was a great sport about being dragged all around Utah, and he hardly ever complained. He's such a tough guy.</div><br />

However, I was disappointed with the final installment, so I was more excited for the food than I was for the actual discussion of the third book. Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed. There are some very clever people in my book group, and we had some great refreshments. Here are the pictures (you may not understand some of the references if you haven't read the book, but you can still appreciate the great food):</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I know it doesn't look very big in the pictures, but believe me, it was. Imagine 45 acres of pure corn, and it might seem a little bit bigger. It took us a decent amount of time to find our way out of the maze, and that was even after cheating a little when it got dark and started raining. We even had a map of the maze with us, and it still took us a long time. <br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">"What Did You Expect?"</span></span> </div><div style="text-align: center;">a Davis 2nd Ward production </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">A little background: To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the Woodland, CA stake, each ward created a 15-minute production that revolved around the theme "Celebrate the Beginning" (because, of course, we were celebrating a beginning). I was originally asked to write the script, so I thought that my part in the roadshow was going to be over early. However, I ended up directing it as well to help out a fellow ward member with a heavy school schedule. I enjoyed directing because I got to work some really great people and learned to appreciate all the little things that go into a production (because I had to spend a <b>lot </b>of time working with the Drama Specialist to work out little details). I also played the role of a "Stroller Mama" in a number choreographed by the former captain of the UC Irvine hip hop team (pretty cool, huh?). Zac lent his vocal talents by playing the role of "Wrubell," the sports announcer. Even though neither of us expected to spend so much time working on the show, we both had a really great experience. I especially enjoyed getting to know some awesome people in our ward and making some new friends. </div><br />
Anyway, I managed to get a copy of our performance so everyone could see it. I had to split the video into two because YouTube only allows videos less than ten minutes long, so don't forget to watch the second one. I hope you enjoy!<br />
<br />
Oh, and the recording started a little late, so here are the first few lines that don't appear in the video:<br />
<br />
Jim: Honey! I'm home!<br />
Emma: How did your game go?<br />
Jim: Great! I got another two home runs and a couple of plays at first base. There were a lot of scouts there, but I don't know if they liked me.<br />
Emma: What do you mean? Scouts have been calling ever since the game ended, asking to talk to you. [<i>Start video</i>]<br />

</div>Oh, and we had an "Oscar" party after our performance. I won the "You Are Funny" award (luckily, people understood my sense of humor). Zac won the "Mr. Mellow" award for being so optimistic and mellow when things got a little stressful. <br />
<br />
Everyone worked hard and I think they all had a great time.<br />

As of last week, I have. Zac and I celebrated <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picnic_Day_%28UC_Davis%29">Picnic Day</a> with hundreds of thousands of other UC Davis students, families, and alumni. I'm still not quite sure what we were celebrating, but I do know that the 100-year-old tradition is quite the event to attend. All of the departments on campus have booths or activities that let visitors see their research, which allows for a pretty interesting afternoon. Here are some of the things that we saw:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1dbygPnEEK_ndsIyCSFBkiAi69ejl4YKkuTM6whrts7yKNnkg7YEg4J47S5cukyjFiAbS_56UpO0uqEwazKONviy3Q6vr5tt6_ZQortGLJu0BjaJL9A65Qt5hiIKJ3AngQ314xOiJJvQ/s1600/Picnic+Day+%2710.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1dbygPnEEK_ndsIyCSFBkiAi69ejl4YKkuTM6whrts7yKNnkg7YEg4J47S5cukyjFiAbS_56UpO0uqEwazKONviy3Q6vr5tt6_ZQortGLJu0BjaJL9A65Qt5hiIKJ3AngQ314xOiJJvQ/s320/Picnic+Day+%2710.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble ... wait a second ... this isn't a witch boiling up a deadly potion. It's the chemistry department brewing up some tasty chocolate ice cream made from chocolate (of course), milk, and liquid nitrogen. My review? Delicious--tasted like a frosty.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU3XDwKhk6iaCBXtrr5vNOtaFl0Vj_HtP5zHdbo4RO2XWhwArMW0rXccABox2wvAjMeRmxDyhHTNlTqOn6AtCriWPwfqlVAiBCcK415VJlEqoUuMyMW9qE9_co1b3X5zXrib8GKUS7G1Y/s1600/Picnic+Day+%2710+%286%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU3XDwKhk6iaCBXtrr5vNOtaFl0Vj_HtP5zHdbo4RO2XWhwArMW0rXccABox2wvAjMeRmxDyhHTNlTqOn6AtCriWPwfqlVAiBCcK415VJlEqoUuMyMW9qE9_co1b3X5zXrib8GKUS7G1Y/s320/Picnic+Day+%2710+%286%29.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">"Got Milk?" or "Just do it"? Whatever the slogan, I bet that she was just happy that she wasn't one of the cows at the end of a loooong line of people wanting to try their hand at milking. We didn't want to wait in line, but we did see (and smell) a lot of other animals at the agricultural exhibit.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">My favorite part of the day was probably the Doxie Derby, a derby for the cute and fast little creatures known as dachshunds. I don't know what was more interesting--watching the dogs, watching the owners trying to get their dog to win, or watching the people in the crowd trying to get everyone to do the wave (they finally succeeded). If I missed the dogs, though, I could always catch the end of the race on the instant replay screens--it was pretty funny to watch the dogs run in slow motion. For a small taste of this wonderful event, please watch the clip below.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
<object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7spckJm0lWk&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7spckJm0lWk&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">We saw other interesting things but, unfortunately, I wasn't able to get pictures of everything. We walked by a bike parade, which had bikes that ranged from a huge monster bike to a tri-andum bike (like a tandem but with three seats). We stood about twenty feet away from a helicopter as it was taking off. We saw people racing cockroaches (which I refused to do). We built a protein with one of Zac's professors. We tasted "exotic" fruit--the only one that was really "exotic" was probably the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackfruit" style="color: blue;">jackfruit</a> (unlike pineapple and mango). I saw glow-in-the-dark bacteria for the first time at the microbiology exhibit. We walked all across campus and, surprisingly, ran into quite a few people from our ward. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Not bad for a single afternoon.</div>Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-31743819957851591602010-02-07T23:26:00.000-08:002010-02-07T23:26:30.609-08:00Our New CouchesWe finally got new couches! We bought them (a loveseat and a sofa) from a couple that lives on the other side of Davis and our home teacher helped us get them home (unfortunately, couches would not fit in little Rhonda, aka our car). Here are some pictures of our newest additions to our apartment:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9mQe94vWKqSo7jf9UJnrBFNbB6RyZU-CJazvJhc_tiT4jbgD-xLU5yUKcbRRGwY1JUSlmjkpduxklr3hdO2qd9EoC6JKBgbWgTf2txilFjPf32njVmmkI8p-uuC-VBRzxpi9mXfoJHz4/s1600-h/DSCN5803.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9mQe94vWKqSo7jf9UJnrBFNbB6RyZU-CJazvJhc_tiT4jbgD-xLU5yUKcbRRGwY1JUSlmjkpduxklr3hdO2qd9EoC6JKBgbWgTf2txilFjPf32njVmmkI8p-uuC-VBRzxpi9mXfoJHz4/s320/DSCN5803.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The beautiful fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKmrgYFKk861v_L7K9N9QrdNPHEuh0n4EjMpprJRYyclCkiZWEls4JDt7vZS_-b7rHxab5u0GmZKoWNRGiog67hNnLzuUYIi6PkMXfvQLtaGdY2JbOZRjaB2azb-kdRiX3MER5YTnIqrY/s1600-h/DSCN5804.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKmrgYFKk861v_L7K9N9QrdNPHEuh0n4EjMpprJRYyclCkiZWEls4JDt7vZS_-b7rHxab5u0GmZKoWNRGiog67hNnLzuUYIi6PkMXfvQLtaGdY2JbOZRjaB2azb-kdRiX3MER5YTnIqrY/s320/DSCN5804.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The sofa with its original covering.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">With these new additions, we had to rearrange our apartment a little bit. Our rocking chair is currently in our room next to our bed because there was no room for it in the living room. We also recently moved the piano where the desk was (see photo above), the desk where the bookshelf used to be, and the bookshelf where the piano used to be (refer to previous photos on the blog if you wish to see where they used to be). The changes make the apartment feel a little more comfortable, especially now that we don't have to sit in lawn chairs all the time or race for the rocking chair.</div>Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-57342350536414205332010-02-07T23:02:00.000-08:002010-05-25T11:19:47.000-07:00Some Important Terms to KnowI know that some of my family in the West was a little confused when I was talking about the things I did while visiting New Hampshire. Here is a small dictionary that may clear up some of the confusion, as well as let you know about some of the things that we did.<b> </b><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><b>candlepin bowling </b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">\kan-d</span></span>əl-pin bo-liŋ\ <i>n</i> (1880) : a fun, popular alternative to bowling found in New Hampshire. The main differences between this game and ten-pin bowling are found in the pins, the size of the ball, and the taking turn sequence. The pins are similar to . . . well . . . long, hard candles--candles that are slightly tapered at both ends.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsZALnhdcqQXZyn5MUHiCbnF13uWgXEAV_EJpG38yXH7z52xi1iXj7UpeGOpdU6-q9UbAVfLNEX31n8GUEGYaWsAdFFlu8T-sJVMi9erxsXV5-iZf8h_rRgPwfwlsxHuvwObMY8HP7Ag/s1600-h/Christmas+2009+%282%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsZALnhdcqQXZyn5MUHiCbnF13uWgXEAV_EJpG38yXH7z52xi1iXj7UpeGOpdU6-q9UbAVfLNEX31n8GUEGYaWsAdFFlu8T-sJVMi9erxsXV5-iZf8h_rRgPwfwlsxHuvwObMY8HP7Ag/s320/Christmas+2009+%282%29.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A player has three tries in each turn to knock down all ten candlepins; however, the fallen pins aren't cleared off until the very end of a player's turn, coming in very handy when a player needs to knock out a stubborn split. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The ball for candlestick bowling is a little bit heavier and a little bit larger than a softball--without any holes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh77ARxVqNbptGVADLWo8I9Fu_zt6DAmmvFkTqhyphenhyphenU0GGIu3Dt530oN8ZHKB1Hv1AAhhYN22S2awKGtwlKV6c4ZDOAnPe7PBpvQr6fbiJljrR3o1RHMahH_3hDevx8n5e8oYc-VdVmolEwo/s1600-h/Christmas+2009+%283%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh77ARxVqNbptGVADLWo8I9Fu_zt6DAmmvFkTqhyphenhyphenU0GGIu3Dt530oN8ZHKB1Hv1AAhhYN22S2awKGtwlKV6c4ZDOAnPe7PBpvQr6fbiJljrR3o1RHMahH_3hDevx8n5e8oYc-VdVmolEwo/s320/Christmas+2009+%283%29.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Other than these few differences, the game is very similar to ten-pin bowling.<br />
<ul><li>Some example sentences:</li>
<ul><li>If you try to pitch a <i>candlepin </i>ball like a softball, a couple turns could end with embarrassing gutter balls or one-point turns.</li>
<li><i>Candlepin bowling </i>has gutter protectors just like regular bowling, but they won't stop a player from throwing a gutter ball.</li>
</ul></ul>*Special Lewis term:<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">Meh strategy</span> </b></span><i>n</i> (2009) : a strategy used in candlepin bowling. The main idea: if you don't care too much about the number of pins that you knock over and don't try too hard, you will score more points.<br />

<ul><li>Trevor and Kierra, while employing the <i>Meh strategy</i>, became the champions of the evening, winning one game each.</li>
<li>After Amanda stopped trying to throw the ball the fastest down the lane (the lanes had radar guns) and tried the <i>Meh strategy</i>, she scored a lot more points.</li>

Pink? . . . Christmas<div style="text-align: center;"><b>An Ode to Our First Christmas </b><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The nylons were hung by the chimney with care<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">In hopes that something pink soon would be there<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The siblings were nestled, all snug in their beds<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">While visions of Wii games danced in their heads<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">With Zac on the floor and I in my bed<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Waking up early is what we did dread<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">With a sound like a jet, there arose such a clatter<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I peaked open my eyes to see what was the matter<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">"Santa has arrived in a plane!" I said.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">But it was only the heater at the foot of my bed.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">More rapid than eagles the morning it came<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We heard Cameron shout and call us by name.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">"Now, Zatry, Now 'manda, Now Kia, Now T-revor<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">It's time to wake up--I've been waiting forever."<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And then, with a yawn, we went down the stairs<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And flopped, quite tiredly, into our chairs.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The unwrapping began, the paper it flew<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">There were games to play and candy to chew<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">There were tickets to games and nice clothes to wear<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Shiny, bright jewelery and things for my hair.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And then, of course, my favorite gift:<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">A program for editing .JPEGs and .GIFs <br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We got cookbooks and knives, blankets and honey,<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">A sheep we named Nigel, gift cards, and money.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Christmas leaves us oh so inspired--<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Except the instructions: some assembly required<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So with Athena's presents we began to tinker,<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Noticing the room was somehow much pinker.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Our presents unwrapped, on the floor they did lay<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Downstairs we did go, the Wii fit to play.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I talked with my family on phone and online<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">For all those in Utah I tried not to pine.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The vacation was over, it really did fly<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Our bags were much heavier and we all knew why<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We heard Cameron say as we drove out of sight:<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">"Merry Mitmas to all, and to all a good flight!"<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">................<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
Some pictures of our white Christmas:<br />

Thanks to everyone for making our first Christmas together great!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-67590431075274738142010-01-24T22:07:00.000-08:002010-01-24T22:12:45.254-08:00ThanksgivingWe had a great first Thanksgiving together, mainly because I didn't have to do any cooking. We traveled to Utah to see our much-missed family and had a blast seeing everyone. Here are some of the fun things that we did:<br />
<ul><li>We went to Salt Lake City to see the lights at Temple Square. The lights were beautiful, and we even got a personalized tour of the President's room in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Actually, it's not quite as cool as it sounds because it was just a room with pictures of all the modern Prophets in it--but it was still a pretty neat aerial (almost) view of the trees on Temple Square. The red tree that you see in this picture is a cedar of Lebanon, which is the tree that was used to build the Temple of Solomon.<br />
</li>

A trunk-or-treat is a win-win-win situation--the kids have easy access to candy, the parents don't have to worry about their children, and the adults without children still get to dress up and get candy without feeling too silly.<br /><br />The Sunday before Halloween, the activities committee chair in our ward notified us that there was going to be a prize for the best decorated trunk as well as the best decorated adult. Therefore, Zac and I were on the lookout for some good ideas to win the big prize. Initially, I wanted to dress up as a pirate and turn our turnk into a pirate treasure box, as piracy has been a theme for me for the past few Halloweens. While we were at Wal-Mart one night, we saw something that I thought would make our trunk perfect--a little rubber ducky that was dressed in a pirate outfit. Zac, however, didn't quite take to my pirate idea, so I had to come up with something new. Because there were multiple ducks that were dressed up in different outfits, I came up with the idea to turn our trunk into a bubble bath--the ducks were dressed up specially for Halloween and Zac and I could dress like we just got out of the shower. Zac convinced me that it was an original idea, and thanks to Google, dollar stores, and Target, this is what we came up with:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27hNkp89nK1N6XYd21mwtMGMwiPnYJBT93spgnSud855z2Q1RUgZPYGnZVN-WpqfpoWaFgFHgRZGBaW95qipm54dorFBrZRDtyn9Zto_mse1I7QxbYSaE4uQP3vVXDvfVnlb9VlpLN7I/s1600-h/DSCN5706.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27hNkp89nK1N6XYd21mwtMGMwiPnYJBT93spgnSud855z2Q1RUgZPYGnZVN-WpqfpoWaFgFHgRZGBaW95qipm54dorFBrZRDtyn9Zto_mse1I7QxbYSaE4uQP3vVXDvfVnlb9VlpLN7I/s320/DSCN5706.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401964799551981826" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7gaDydD4P2obJuWLr7gZ7qSTCzlWh5AZtJcw3fdoiHkWl5-qYeEoEEHuTWaqJuwbe3k0nDt3ejhQgyJiCSjxKeFmkvlh0Jm_9teXsv9JypA01nQX-R5ufs5AQONtc7KOvlDr5hwsdD18/s1600-h/DSCN5702.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7gaDydD4P2obJuWLr7gZ7qSTCzlWh5AZtJcw3fdoiHkWl5-qYeEoEEHuTWaqJuwbe3k0nDt3ejhQgyJiCSjxKeFmkvlh0Jm_9teXsv9JypA01nQX-R5ufs5AQONtc7KOvlDr5hwsdD18/s320/DSCN5702.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401982799424580914" border="0" /></a>Although I was handing out the candy, I think the children had more fun at the "bubble car" watching the bubbles that Zac was blowing. Sometimes, they would sit and watch the bubbles and then leave without getting any candy. And I thought that I would be the popular one with the candy. Oh well. Luckily, the judges for the contest liked our trunk as well because we won the award for "Best Family Theme," as well as a gift certificate to In-N-Out. Mission: accomplished.<br /><br />Later that day, we decided to carve some pumpkins. I think they turned out great--they might even look a little bit like us.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwIvpBwjFq6TrYrze3-q2qLBEoooGh-P0ejddjKtuKYw-2dtzyuwAErw07YxYdAFgZa2TMuJhq6jFfg10fWOTbRTkWzKh3Bt8w-kgh8jZSd7zMDphmoBUANDireeTkvB5wFTxC10C5Ll0/s1600-h/DSCN5728.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwIvpBwjFq6TrYrze3-q2qLBEoooGh-P0ejddjKtuKYw-2dtzyuwAErw07YxYdAFgZa2TMuJhq6jFfg10fWOTbRTkWzKh3Bt8w-kgh8jZSd7zMDphmoBUANDireeTkvB5wFTxC10C5Ll0/s320/DSCN5728.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401985547918434786" border="0" /></a>All in all, I think we had a pretty good first Halloween in Davis.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-24684297081403907502009-10-24T19:15:00.000-07:002009-10-24T22:43:46.650-07:00Our New HomeWelcome to the virtual tour of our new abode in California. This is our apartment in its decorated, mostly-unpacked state--pretty much the way it will be for the rest of the time we live here. Unless, of course, we get a couch for our living room. When you walk into the door of apartment 29, you will see our living room first. Behind the chair is my desk, which is where I spend a lot of my days studying and doing homework.<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8H_BoNz9XtZqWrAYNXp3zga0y0JDSc7UZvuYV49pN1_Z-AIYHOcfQFXJxysBQ9Ykjlutr2705Is5DoWkXj-pxQl1EjsaxdmxYGp3uO1FvALx-E_r9uHjItgH3IYU48-H12EGCrQzS8w4/s1600-h/DSCN5690.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8H_BoNz9XtZqWrAYNXp3zga0y0JDSc7UZvuYV49pN1_Z-AIYHOcfQFXJxysBQ9Ykjlutr2705Is5DoWkXj-pxQl1EjsaxdmxYGp3uO1FvALx-E_r9uHjItgH3IYU48-H12EGCrQzS8w4/s320/DSCN5690.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396360564628435282" border="0" /></a> If you turn to the right, you will see . . .<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYobEL8cdcW9arITcuWnMqws7i-uQDxN1s3pGfIpUtrqLd5L6OOCC37lPSOX36iaoJdj-CPZE_6wlsFkfNGtBvH8fkg8ecauB4CcWfTFmcTGgmakIDbcdKeNcHsSKQ1SyloFte2QfHbtM/s1600-h/DSCN5672.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYobEL8cdcW9arITcuWnMqws7i-uQDxN1s3pGfIpUtrqLd5L6OOCC37lPSOX36iaoJdj-CPZE_6wlsFkfNGtBvH8fkg8ecauB4CcWfTFmcTGgmakIDbcdKeNcHsSKQ1SyloFte2QfHbtM/s320/DSCN5672.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396364185732872146" border="0" /></a>Our "entertainment center," complete with the occasional bike (sometimes we have to keep them in the apartment if there isn't a place on the rack). The table is actually a dark red (you can't really tell in this picture) and the chairs are black with a strip of padding on the seat. The window gives us a beautiful view of our backyard, which consists of a small concrete patio, a tall tree with Christmas lights still on it, and a small area blocked off with wood and filled with dirt. Next summer it may be the home of our first garden. Now, if you'll follow me, we will make our way into the main part of the kitchen.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKY039DA5qdGLvVcTS9G8S_UXPSH_q0D_2CoGNm3MAlSMqFC7R1fWUpPOxaq_44OS9JYkA6sXim8oqk2boqaB8_Y1A3lULrsKL5h2Rlrz7F3bXG0aZO5yg3u5DzDiiCVy9-DLlCwsqyPo/s1600-h/DSCN5676.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKY039DA5qdGLvVcTS9G8S_UXPSH_q0D_2CoGNm3MAlSMqFC7R1fWUpPOxaq_44OS9JYkA6sXim8oqk2boqaB8_Y1A3lULrsKL5h2Rlrz7F3bXG0aZO5yg3u5DzDiiCVy9-DLlCwsqyPo/s320/DSCN5676.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396371909075936386" border="0" /></a>The stove didn't make it into the picture, but it is just to the left, next to the refrigerator (the table is directly behind us). There are also two other cupboards to the left and to the right of us. The beautiful apron that you see hanging under the clock has been used more and more lately. Yes, I am finally learning how to cook and not burn our apartment down. Except for today, when I didn't notice the smoke . . .<br />Finally, we can go into the back and to the bedroom area--which doesn't really have much but the bed, the ironing board, two closets, two night stands (one on either side of the bed), and a medusa lamp.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDPk-SCF_m91fZBbPVjPtyYP7xBriO6q5OgX4nU3PjBhVchGW76jif4KcoocLlc3DD7Sqd4WxGIxxmLN79AHoA47M7kiJQ1Tr2DLKhIznVc67yv-XsRTTaIAp8hxTRmeTt9fybIkU9GU/s1600-h/DSCN5696.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDPk-SCF_m91fZBbPVjPtyYP7xBriO6q5OgX4nU3PjBhVchGW76jif4KcoocLlc3DD7Sqd4WxGIxxmLN79AHoA47M7kiJQ1Tr2DLKhIznVc67yv-XsRTTaIAp8hxTRmeTt9fybIkU9GU/s320/DSCN5696.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396405593488888882" border="0" /></a>We also have to put a curtain over our window so we can sleep at night--otherwise there is too much light in our room. The ironing board is to the right of the picture and next to it is a black filing cabinet (it matches the desk in the living room) that holds my printer.<br />Now, if you turn around, we can make our last stop at our vanity/bathroom area.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU81LlNGh0xvXufD_uAiv2A3W9jDQcwoEfhgllwXpM4Pn-QGb21W8hMUjbdGS-QwSy8iZN-jZjESmcuq5OMkfOmru5BUv2YY2qI5w0NaDS7dY1rmkuatybXyDMLU7lDmoItJ83wQGWrbI/s1600-h/DSCN5687.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU81LlNGh0xvXufD_uAiv2A3W9jDQcwoEfhgllwXpM4Pn-QGb21W8hMUjbdGS-QwSy8iZN-jZjESmcuq5OMkfOmru5BUv2YY2qI5w0NaDS7dY1rmkuatybXyDMLU7lDmoItJ83wQGWrbI/s320/DSCN5687.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396386779225098018" border="0" /></a>To the left of the picture is our sink, a clock (that doesn't work because the ticking keeps Zac awake at night), and our laundry. It's actually quite nice compared to the last apartment we had because the sink is not in the same room as the shower. Speaking of the shower, and to end this great tour, we would like to show you our decorations in the bathroom.<br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheA8xJP6xj1spjwlmMFa2GRrIbrRttMYWR__9XOeWV1dsLLDHykuzAkktz8IObkD01x3OMT6iR7wKKVUNErGDqnQRqudLBitmk_LTp4Wq36pkjhWu7VJvpMoetVnIfgrPvtFN2r2FeJ1E/s1600-h/DSCN5669.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheA8xJP6xj1spjwlmMFa2GRrIbrRttMYWR__9XOeWV1dsLLDHykuzAkktz8IObkD01x3OMT6iR7wKKVUNErGDqnQRqudLBitmk_LTp4Wq36pkjhWu7VJvpMoetVnIfgrPvtFN2r2FeJ1E/s320/DSCN5669.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396391535877587250" border="0" /></a><br />Yes, there are still some remnants of the Noni. We just couldn't let a huge Tahitian Noni mirror/replica of the juice bottle go to waste. Every time we shower, we are reminded of our five year supply of Tahitian Noni cosmetics. We are comforted to know that if a disaster happens in the Davis area, we may not be able to eat, but we will be able to wash our hair.<br /><br />Well, that ends the tour for today. Hope that you enjoyed yourselves and that we have something to post again soon. Oh, and we don't want you to leave without seeing our happy, smiling faces.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVtEXJpcmcG2cqzqAlASe3ga0siTHpVB7sknf8dozXCzmnj5pzNt7dTEnXFoPbx1yuue6jaCDCjf7_6Tu0GVudm2GQDVHrY-dEE2Z8tt3dO4WwM__M26EnI-toTy8burkwPoLF51pWBfM/s1600-h/DSCN5693.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVtEXJpcmcG2cqzqAlASe3ga0siTHpVB7sknf8dozXCzmnj5pzNt7dTEnXFoPbx1yuue6jaCDCjf7_6Tu0GVudm2GQDVHrY-dEE2Z8tt3dO4WwM__M26EnI-toTy8burkwPoLF51pWBfM/s320/DSCN5693.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396402037246399602" border="0" /></a>~ Amanda and ZacAmandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467775379204284949noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-10257903920583031762009-08-17T13:22:00.000-07:002009-08-17T13:25:01.854-07:00Q: I ______ AmandaYour answer choices are<br /><br />A: Love<br />B: Think the world of<br />C: Like to do things with<br />D: Create your own... extra points for creativity<br /><br />The correct answer will be posted the next time I get a chance to update the blog.<br /><br />~ZacZachttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16461728160454186756noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115094970706005494.post-7229506275857073252009-07-08T22:13:00.000-07:002009-07-08T22:14:09.532-07:00Hi.
